Mission Statement
“To strengthen the area’s economy and improve its standard of living”
History
Although its scope has broadened somewhat since it was formed in 1894, today's Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce still has many of the same objectives as the first organization which originated as The Board of Trade of the City of Vicksburg.
In 1894, The Board of Trade of the City of Vicksburg was founded when a group of Vicksburg businessmen decided to organize in order to protest the high fire insurance rates being charged by the association’s member companies. While insurance rates did dominate the first year's activities, the new organization also took an interest in a number of other community concerns.
The Board of Trade's committees included: Insurance, Roads and Bridges, Freight, Taxation, Membership, Manufacturers, Education, Immigration and Entertainment.
Much like the original group, the number-one job in the minds of the current membership is to "strengthen the area's economy and improve its standard of living." Today's Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce consists of over 400 companies and 800 individuals strong.
Current Chamber
As with the first organization, today’s Chamber is committed to the Vicksburg and Warren County community. This is reflected n the unselfish spirit of its members in the Chamber's Program of Work, which includes such areas as Community Development, Governmental Services, Membership Services, Retirement Development and Internal Development.
The Vicksburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce represents the business interest of the community on all levels of government, speaking out in support of responsible business and the free enterprise system.
Numerous organizations have originated through committee activity within the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce. Many of these groups, fostered or created by the Chamber, are now viable free standing programs and agencies in their own right. Examples of these are: The United Way of West Central Mississippi, Vicksburg & Warren County Economic Development Foundation, Vicksburg Main Street Program, Vicksburg Arts & Crafts Show, Keep Vicksburg Warren Beautiful, Riverfest, Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vicksburg/Tallulah Regional Airport and the Vicksburg Convention Center.
