Education

The Vicksburg Warren School District

Is a voluntarily consolidated system with an elected five member Board of Trustees and an appointed Superintendent. The school district's mission is to teach and inspire all students to continually pursue knowledge, achieve their aspirations and make positive contributions in a changing world. Educational success depends upon the delivery of a quality instructional program, parental involvement and the level of participation from the community.

Serving approximately 9,000 students, the Vicksburg Warren School District has seven elementary schools (K-4), two intermediate schools (5-6), two junior high schools (7-8), two high schools (9-12), and a Center for Alternative Programs. All schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation. Over 47% of the faculty have advanced degrees.

With an emphasis on building a sound foundation for continuing learning and mastery of basic skills, students are challenged to explore beyond the basics. By implementing a district-wide technology plan, students experience the latest in computerized technology. Elementary students benefit from school themes that specialize in science and math instruction, communication, and traditional education. All elementary students participate in library, music, art and biology. Tech Prep, a state-wide initiative, provides students in grades seven through twelve the resources for choosing a career and developing the related skills. To complement academic and development offerings, the district has a comprehensive program of interscholastic activities, including band, choir, music, clubs, cheerleading, drill teams, newspaper and yearbook publications, theater, and a variety of athletics. Resources and services challenge students at their level of potential and development.

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized nationally, Vicksburg High School and the former Halls Ferry Elementary School as Schools of Excellence. In addition, the Vicksburg Warren School District was one of eight Mississippi school districts to receive the "What Parents Want" award. The district produces National Merit Scholars and many compete successfully in programs of study at major colleges and universities, both in Mississippi and around the country. In addition, a large number of graduates serve the community as educators, business and community leaders and elected officials.
